The annual Roots of Empathy baby celebrations were held at the Rotorua District Council Chambers yesterday.

The programme works to reduce bullying in schools.

School classes participate in 27 sessions and a  parent and baby participate as the teachers for nine of those sessions.

Children learn to observe and interpret the baby's communication, helping to build empathy with others.

This year, Barnardos' 72 programmes involved up to 2000 children.

The celebrations were about acknowledging the babies who have inspired the children throughout the year.
