Bail on hold in blackmail case

A Rotorua man has been in court for allegedly impersonating a police officer to blackmail someone for $4000.

The 39-year-old was granted interim name suppression when he appeared before two Justices of the Peace in the Rotorua District Court. .

The man is accused of twice offering to supply a New Plymouth man with the contents of a police investigation in return for $4000, on July 17 and again on July 30 this year.

Duty lawyer Olivia Brittain said an official bail application would be filed as only a judge could grant bail on these charges. He was remanded in custody to reappear on Thursday.
