Big Latch On hopes to break NZ record again

Mums wanting to take part in this year's Big Latch On breastfeeding event won't have to travel too far.

Three venues will be open in Rotorua for the record-breaking attempt and there are three other spots across the Lakes District Health Board region.

The Big Latch On event takes place on Friday, August 6, and starts at 10.30am.

In Rotorua, the Plunket Rooms in Pukuatua St will be open, as well as Indigo Cafe in Hinemoa St and Te Ara ki te Reo ki Kuirau in Amohau St, opposite the skate park.

In Taupo, the latch on event will be held at REAP in Titiraupenga St.

In Turangi, the event will take place in the Turangi Playgroup's blue room in Kaheke St. In Reporoa, breastfeeding mothers can meet at the Reporoa Playcentre in Massey Rd.

Last year New Zealand recorded 1306 women breastfeeding simultaneously.

More mothers are expected to take part this year and in doing so break the record, which has been broken annually since 2005.

Every year the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action sets a new world breastfeeding week theme.

This year the theme is "Breastfeeding - Just 10 steps the baby-friendly way".

Last year more than 500 World Breastfeeding Week events took place globally involving more than 800,000 women.

The Big Latch On celebrates breastfeeding mums and babies, promotes the benefits of breastfeeding for babies, mums and society at large and sends a message that breastfeeding in public will be supported.

Meanwhile, La Leche League New Zealand, a mother-to-mother support organisation, wants more emphasis to be placed on helping mums breastfeed their babies after they are discharged from hospital.
