Rotorua's Eat Streat looks set to become a permanent city feature as the Rotorua District Council seek ideas to turn the area into an "iconic city landmark".

The pedestrian-only outdoor dining precinct comprises the part of Tutanekai St bound by Pukaki and Whakaue streets and was developed in 2008 to trial alfresco dining in the central city.

The council's economic projects manager, Nick Dallimore, said the trial had proved so successful the council was keen to make it permanent, and looking for ideas to further develop the popular area.

"The council is currently seeking imaginative and locally influenced ideas from creative professionals for enhancing the look and feel of the space," he said.

"Our aspiration is that when someone sees a photograph of the Eat Streat area they immediately know where it is in New Zealand and associate it with Rotorua."

John Knight, owner of Eat Streat restaurant Triple 1 Five said he was an ardent supporter of the council's plans to improve the area and believed any development would benefit the whole of Rotorua.

"A lot of city businesses rely on visitors coming here. It would be great for visitors be able to sit out in an area that is equal to anything in the world," he said.

He said it could also bring more conferences to Rotorua, as there would be an attractive area for large groups of diners to enjoy.

Mr Knight said while there were logistical issues to be worked through, he believed other Eat Streat restaurants generally shared his enthusiasm for the project.

He said he would like the development plans to include more coverage for wet weather, the capability for live entertainment for all diners and more seats for non-diners to just sit and enjoy the great atmosphere.

"When the sun is out you can't beat the place," he said.

The council has indicated they will hold a public consultation as plans develop.
