Big swells in the Bay of Plenty are causing significant dangers for swimmers and boaties with a number of rescues being reported.

Police are reminding the public that swimmers should take extra care and swim between the lifeguard flags, watch out for rips and stay away from isolated areas.

The current waves are over 1.5m high and there are numerous rips causing significant dangers.

Boaties are reminded to check the forecast and if in doubt don't go out; always wear life jackets and tell people were you are going.

The current swells are set to ease over the next few days.
