A young woman is lucky to have only a bloody nose and bruises after her car rolled about 10 metres down a bank.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Crawford Rd, Te Puna about 5pm yesterday.

Constable Paul Gunner said the 23-year-old woman was heading north along Crawford Rd when she took a corner too fast, crashed through a fence and slid down the bank.

"She's pushed the corner too fast, lost control, over-corrected and fell off the road," he said.

It appeared the woman's white Subaru Legacy slid sideways down the bank until the wheels dug in and flipped the car once. It landed right way up at the bottom of the bank.

The woman suffered a bloody nose and bruising and was taken to Tauranga Hospital for a check-up.

Mr Gunner said the woman was a tourist who had been in the area since November.

Nearby residents heard the crash and came out to investigate. One neighbour said he heard a crunching sound.

When he went outside to investigate, he saw the woman standing by her car at the bottom of the bank.

The man said it was "quite a sharp corner".

This was the third time a car had lost control and crashed through the fence.
