A 28-year-old man was airlifted off the northern slopes of Mt Ngauruhoe on Saturday afternoon after he was injured by falling rocks.

The man had climbed to the summit and was descending with a female companion when rocks dislodged by another party higher up the mountain went careering toward them.

He pushed his companion to the ground to shield her and was hit in the arms and leg by two rocks. The man was transported to Taupo Hospital by Taupo's Greenlea rescue helicopter. The woman was uninjured.
