Edgecumbe College's Adele Hanright is an "outstanding all rounder" who has huge musical ability.

The Year 12 student receives The Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award today for her abilities in many aspects of school life, says her principal Gavin Greenfield.

Musically, Adele has made a huge contribution to the school.

She is part of the school's orchestra and is a competent pianist and flautist.

She was instrumental in recently setting up a college jazz group and music is one of the subjects she studies at school.

She competes in many sports at the school and has excelled at both athletics and swimming, representing the school at the Bay of Plenty secondary school athletics championship and being named the school's senior swimming champion.

"Adele is a pleasant and cheerful young lady who participates with enthusiasm in any activity she undertakes.

"She is always looking to contribute to some aspect of college life," Mr Greenfield said.

For level 1 of NCEA last year she achieved 172 credits including numerous excellence and merit grades.

She hopes to do well in level two of NCEA this year and return to school next year to complete level three.

Adele is not sure what career path she would like to head down but it is sure to involve music.

Taupo's Kelly Woolacott is well-known in tennis circles with a ninth placing in the New Zealand under-16 girls' championships and a top ranking in the Eastern Districts' side.

The Year 13 Tauhara College student receives The Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award for her outstanding achievement on the tennis court and her contribution to school sports.

Earlier this year she won the Waikato tennis tournament and was runner-up in a similar event at Auckland's North Harbour.

Last year she came sixth in the indoor national tournament in Dunedin.

This year she is the school's student sports co-ordinator.

Principal Peter Grant describes Kelly as an accomplished tennis player who is enthusiastic about the sport and inspires others with her ability.

As sports co-ordinator Kelly speaks at assemblies, reporting on events and encouraging students to get involved in extra curricular activities.

"She is a popular leader who relates well to a wide variety of people ...

"She has already demonstrated the ability to set worthwhile yet attainable goals, and then enjoy the challenge of trying to meet them," Mr Grant said.

Originally from South Africa, Kelly has adapted well to life in Taupo and has built a sound reputation as a positive achiever.

The 16-year-old's involvement in sport does not end with competitive tennis.

She coaches several local students in the sport and also plays badminton.

This year she is studying five subjects for level three of NCEA, including the three sciences.

She hopes to go to Otago University next year to study to become either a sports physiotherapist or a chemistry teacher.
