A positive attitude and plenty of passion keep Taupo-Nui-a-Tia College student Lisa Lockwood on top of her game.

The multi-talented student receives the Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award today for her achievements in both sport and academics.

Lisa, 17, has a wide range of interests and has gained many notable achievements.

She twice received the All Round Excellence Award in her junior years, gained the highest number of NCEA Credits in Year 11 and achieved Academic Excellence in English and physical education in Year 12. Lisa was chief executive of the Year 12 winning team at the Lion Business Experience and is maintaining a high standard in her Year 13 studies.

Her participation in school life is exemplary, according to principal Graeme Ryan.

A talented young actor, she was a member of the Shakespeare One Act Play cast in 2004 and helped direct the senior drama group at the Sheila Winn Festival. She modelled, acted and danced in all sections of the national Schools Wearable Art and Fashion Awards and was a winner in the Taupo Youth Talent Awards dance section.

Lisa also featured a TVNZ documentary about the disappearance of Mona Blades, acting the part of the central character.

"Her sporting progress also reflects her all round abilities," said Mr Ryan.

Lisa plays cricket and netball for the school and came second in the javelin event at the Mid-Island athletics championships after winning at the school.

This year Lisa is a house captain, convenor of the ball Committee, convenor of the sports committee and contributes to a local newspaper. She is also working on her Gold Young New Zealanders Award.

Next year Lisa plans to begin a Bachelor of Broadcasting TV and Media course at Canterbury University.

  • Life is a stage for Tokoroa High School's deputy head girl Kimberley Muncaster.

Kimberley is being awarded The Daily Post Youth in Excellence Award for her passion as an actor and her application in the classroom.

Her teachers speak highly of the Year 13 student's dramatic flair and say she's also a dedicated academic student majoring in chemistry.

Kimberley became involved in school productions and musical performances in primary school and threw herself into similar activities when she began at Tokoroa High School.

As a Year 9 student, she immediately took part in the school's production of Smithy and began what would become a long string of Shakespearian performances. Starting with smaller parts and gradually gaining lead roles, Kimberley was chosen last year to be a National Shakespeare in Schools Production Direct Entrant at the Sheila Winn Shakespeare in schools regional competition. This gave her the distinction of being one of 46 secondary school students, chosen from more than 4000 to participate in a master workshop production of Shakespeare.

She took on the role of Audrey in Tokoroa High School's production of Little Shop of Horrors last year and had a major breakthrough in her acting when she won the coveted role of Margot in The Diary of Anne Frank which will tour new Zealand from May to October this year.

In addition to her acting and singing, Kimberley is also studying music and plays saxophone in the school's jazz band. She passed her recent theory exam with honours.

A degree in visual and performing arts is on Kimberley's agenda for next year but right now she is rehearsing solidly for The Diary of Anne Frank.

In addition to this big commitment, Kimberley is producing three excerpts for the 2005 Sheila Winn Shakespeare festival and is taking part in the school's debating team.
