Plagued by health problems, William Taki was told by his doctor to get on a bike.

Now, a year on, the Rotorua man is out biking almost every day and is reaping the benefits.

The 49-year-old was one of the city's cyclists who yesterday took part in Go by Bike Day, encouraging people to use their bikes to get to work, school or play.

Sport Bay of Plenty operated four pit stops throughout Rotorua handing out fruit, drinks and spot prizes to participants.

Mr Taki said he was proof of the benefits of getting on your bike and getting fit - and reckons if he can do it then anyone can.

Before he began cycling he had major heart problems and diabetes. In the past year he has lost 15kg and his diabetes has improved.

"It was a life decision. No one else is going to look after me but me."

He said he felt much better, had more energy and was on less medication. Getting motivated to get out on his bike every day was a constant battle but he said the benefits made it worthwhile.

He had his bike donated to him through Whanau Ora and said one of his favourite places to go biking was in the Redwoods.

It's now also one of his main means of transport. "Of course anyone can do it. It's about will and determination and how much your health means to you."

More FM's Lou Parker said some pit stops had queues waiting when they opened at 7am. She said the response had been really positive, with people saying they wished it happened once a month.
