Events galore at A&P Show
The Tauranga A&P Show will celebrate its 118th show this year with its "bringing the country to the city" philosophy that has made it a traditional Kiwi favourite.
Secretary/treasurer Sue McDonald says it's a fabulous event steeped in history and great entertainment for the whole family.
There are numerous attractions planned, including an old spectator sport favourite - a wood chopping demonstration by the Rotorua Axemen's Club.
Wood chopping and sawing has a number of disciplines: Jack-and-Jill sawing, single saw, underhand and standing chops, all of which will be on display at the show.
Accomplished axe man Bevin Cavey will demonstrate his talents, and says he finds the heritage sport pleasantly addictive. He enjoys the heady competitiveness and the awesome thrill of competing against world champions.
McDonald says other features include a combat demonstration from the Northern Horde Medieval - a small army of enthusiasts who fight using medieval and Viking-style weapons such as spears, axes, daggers, shield and weapon combinations.
The Welsh shearing team will also pit its skills against talented local shearers in a battle against the clock.
McDonald says another highlight will be the Bay of Plenty Strongest Man contest.
However, a lot will be happening in the equestrian arena and the livestock areas, with Western Riding events and the North Island Dexter cattle breeds championships.
This, alongside the Auckland District Mounted Games, children's petting zoo, free climbing wall and volcano adventure run, a variety of food stalls, pony rides, harness horses, wood chopping, shearing events, cattle events, alpacas, kids' games, water slides, a vintage tractor display, miniature train rides, trade sites and fairground rides means there is something for everyone, says McDonald.
She is encouraging people to come along to the A&P Show to ensure it's another success.
