Fitzgerald crosses long distance line first

Steve Fitzgerald was first across the line in the 1500m during Lake City Athletic Club's track and field night on Wednesday.

Fitzgerald warded off competition from 21 competitors in the popular long distance event, that saw Richard Harris and Trevor Ogilvie finish second and third respectively. Kerryn Hewlett was the quickest female over the same distance from Emily Pritchard and Pam Kenny.

In the 1500m walk, John Bishop had a comfortable win over Tom Lamason and Christine Hocking.

In the 5000m, which attracted a field of 28, Steven O'Callaghan lapped the entire field to win in 16m19s from Colin Earwaker (17m34s) and Trevor Ogilvie (17m47s).

Lynne Peirse took out the women's race in 21m48s from Chloe Hennessey and Lynne Ogilvie.

Like the previous club nights, Maurice Barrow headed off Nathan Hunt in the 60m sprint, while Hunt worked hard to take out the 200m from John Lavery and Stuart Wallace.

Next Wednesday the senior section of the Club will start their championship programme with the 3km (men), 2km (women) steeplechase and 1km walk for all grades being contested.

The night will include the 60m, 400m, discus and long jump.
