Rotorua looks likely to continue hosting the Lake City Pentathlon and Ribbon Athletics day after a successful inaugural event.

The children's athletic event was held at the Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday.

Athletes from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions competed in a range of events such as the 200m and 800m, shot put, discus, long jump and more.

Performances were scored to find the strongest athlete across all disciplines.

Rotorua Lakes City children's athletics convener Martin Hyde said all competitors did extremely well but two local athletes, 14-year-old Katie Sparrow and 13-year-old Claudia Hyde, stood out with first placings for all events in their age group.

The two girls will compete in the National Interprovincial athletics championships in Waikato next month.

"It was a great turnout of 70 local athletes. This was the first time Rotorua has held the event and after Saturday's success it will suggest it stays here," Mr Hyde said.

The pentathlon is a formal event for children aged between 14 and 16 but there are also other events for 5- to 9-year-olds.

"Saturday was an all-day event which started at 10am and lasted until 5pm. It was great. We were caught out by the weather at the last minute, but otherwise we had good support from local supporters and local clubs," Mr Hyde said.

Events for the younger children have seen potential champions emerge from Rotorua.

"Caleb Ralph's daughter, Ashley, was placed third in her age group, with another local girl, Amy Scott, placed first for the 9-year-old section," he said.

Other results were Hunter Cowan placed first for 7-year-old boys and Mia Carrington and Jorgia Oliver placed first equal for 6-year-old girls. Chris Werner was placed first for 5-year-old boys.
