The top 16 contestants in the new series of MasterChef New Zealand will be in Rotorua during Sunday night's episode.

Not too much can be given away but TVNZ has confirmed the group will take part in a hangi challenge on Mokoia Island. Teams have just four-and-a-half hours to cook a hangi.

But the top 16 will not get away with serving pork and puha; a gourmet hangi is expected and those who can't deliver face a lonely trip home.
