Dressed casually in shorts and jandals, Carlos Spencer looked anything like the flamboyant All Blacks and Blues Super 12 star he has become known as.

But for the eager fans who packed out McLeod's Booksellers in Rotorua yesterday, the laid back approach was "all good".

Spencer made a flying half-hour visit to the Sulphur City yesterday afternoon as part of his promotional tour for his new authorised biography Carlos, penned by Richard Becht. And for two eager youngsters - arriving early paid off.

"He was in the All Blacks and he's my favourite," enthused 11-year-old Daniel Horgan, who played first five-eighth for Marist St Micheal's this season. "He's cool and I really want his autograph."

Horgan and 11-year-old Brook Amon had waited patiently for their hero to arrive and were duly rewarded by being the first two fans to receive his autograph.

For Horgan it was even more special, when Spencer added his signature to an already star-studded All Blacks jersey that included the signatures of Tana Umaga, Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen.

McLeod's owner David Thorp was pleased with the turnout and said 30 people had pre-ordered the signing of their books to avoid the rush.

Publisher Bill Honeybone said the support from the Rotorua public had been fantastic.

"It's been great - a full house. However I am surprised as several people have bought multiple copies of the book - and we haven't seen that before."

After moving on to Tauranga and Thames yesterday, Spencer continues his promotional tour of the North Island today.
