Rotorua Boys' High School suffered a second defeat at the Rankin Cup on Tuesday, going down 6-1 to Westlake Boys' High School.

Coach Matt Dalton said ahead of their third and final pool match - due to be played on Tuesday at 4.20pm - they still had a chance of reaching the favoured top eight but they would have to beat St Andrew's College "comfortably".

Westlake went 1-0 up in the first half and Rotorua were able to equalise through Kierin Davidson.

"We played well in phases but ultimately made some poor decisions and it cost us," Dalton said.

"It was  1-1 for a long period but it was one of those games where as soon as you fall behind, the more you have to chase.

"It's a tough pill to swallow but they realise this is the best 16 in the country and the standard is top notch."

Meanwhile, Western Heights High School boys are competing in the Johnson Cup secondary schools tournament in Ashburton. They won their first match 5-2 against Ashburton College. Their pool also includes New Plymouth Boys' High School and Kamo High School.
