While many struggle each year to complete the 42.2km around Lake Rotorua, Rotorua Marathon Survivors Club members can boast they've done it at least 15 times.

Colin and Pat Smyth say their group is different in that you have to earn your way in.

"You have to do the work," Mr Smyth said.

"You've got to do a 15-year apprenticeship."

The club formed in 1993 with 29 members. It has now grown to 400 members throughout New Zealand and Australia.

The organisation of the race and its scenery are some of the many reasons that keep bringing people back to compete, according to the Smyths.

"It's mainly the course that people enjoy. It's only one lap around the lake, it's pretty and it's hard," Mrs Smyth said.

Mr Smyth is set to attempt to complete his 47th marathon this year, on April 30.

His wife will be leading a group of walkers along the circuit, marking her 17th time around.

"When people hear you've done it so many times, they tell you you're mad," Mr Smyth said.

"Some of the [survivor club] members say they'll just go to 15 then stop but they do two more and then another three and it just keeps on going."

The evening of marathon day, returning members gather for a club dinner where those who are newly qualified to join are presented with a certificate and a T-shirt. Every five years, club members receive a commemorative shirt.

"For us we enjoy the club because we know so many people that take part in the marathon. We don't get to see them on the run and it's a great chance to catch up and have a chat."

Club historian Pam Kenny said there were more than 20 people who will complete the club's entry requirements this year. "They need to send in the years they have done the event for me to verify before they can join."

The Smyths recommend people train for two years before taking on any marathon.

"You have to give your body a chance to adapt - just go slowly," Mr Smyth said.

His wife agreed and suggested people get started by joining a club. "It's good camaraderie. It's a bit lonely if you're doing it by yourself. But overall just have fun and enjoy it."
