Household goods are going on sale to help raise money for an orphanage and school in Cambodia.

In a bid to raise money for Savong's School in Cambodia, Rotaract Rotorua are selling household goods at The Rotorua North Rotary Club Charity Flea Market this weekend.

Rotaract Rotorua member Kylie Hickey will be spending three weeks volunteering at Savong's School, which has approximately 650 students. The 27-year-old and a friend will be travelling to the school in December and money raised from the market stall will go directly to the school.

"I mentioned [to Rotaract] I was going over there and we all decided it would be a good cause to fundraise for.

"I've been to America and Europe, so this will be the first time I've been to a third-world country. I'm going to have to rough it a little, but I'm looking forward to the challenge."

The Rotorua Rotaract regularly raises money for various causes and groups such as the Rotorua School for Young Parents, Rotorua SPCA Centre and Life Education Trust. They are also planning to help build a school in Fiji for girls.

Miss Hickey said community support was strong for the Rotaract stall. "We've had really good support from people donating stuff. There's a lot of kitchenware, powertools, appliances, clothes, TVs. There are even larger items like an oven and fridge and freezer that we are selling on Trade Me."

Miss Hickey's trip coincides with the completion of her university studies to become an English, history and social studies high school teacher. Her new qualification will come in handy, as there are only five teachers at Savong's School. She hopes to find work in the Rotorua area when she returns.

"Savong's School is for all ages and classes are from 6am to lunchtime, then they go off to work and come back at night for English classes."

The fundraiser market stall will be held at Kuirau Park on Saturday between 6am and 12pm.
