Toni Wurzer is kicking himself for thinking he wasn't good enough to compete in the North Island Disc Golf championships.

The 47-year-old labourer decided to be his flatmate Dean Marshall's spotter. A spotter is like the caddy in golf.

"I didn't think my game was up to standard.

"It was silly on my behalf - I don't think I would have won but I think I could have done okay."

Twenty-five competitors took part in this year's champs held at the Scion Tree Nursery, with Tauranga's Dean Marshall winning the men's division, Papamoa's Karoline Jonsson winning the women's and 11-year-old Aucklander Toby Gentil winning the junior division.

Wurzer said there was a lot of talent on show for the two-day event, with Jonsson beating the men and winning the longest drive with a 78m throw.

"It's a great sport. You've got a beautiful park to play in, there is great skill involved to try and master flight, the camaraderie and of course, it's free to play."

Wurzer has been playing disc golf for 15 years after taking up the sport with the encouragement of Marshall.

"All it cost is the price of a disc."

An average disc can cost about $30, Wurzer said.

"Those who are serious about the sport will have a few different discs - a putter, a mid range and a driver. It all depends on what you want to spend."

Age was no a factor when it came to competing, Wurzer said - the oldest competitor was 62.

Marshall, dominated his three rounds with a 56, 52 and 52 on the 18 hole, 57 par course, while Jonsson showed good consistent form with a 65, 66 and a 70 on the final day.

Wurzer said anyone interested in taking up the sport could check out the sport's official website www.discgolf.co.nz.

The next tournament is to be held in Hamilton on February 4, 5 and 6.
