DESIGNS ON LIFE: Sedona Lett has designed a card to raise funds for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.
Sedona Lett has never been to Christchurch, nor does she know anyone who lives there, but that hasn't stopped the 9-year-old wanting to help the quake-hit city.
The Westbrook Primary School pupil has put pen to paper and now has packets of cards on sale to raise funds for the earthquake appeal.
She has been helped by Waiariki Institute of Technology lecturer Narissa Bayler, who worked with Sedona to turn the idea into a reality.
"I felt really sorry for the Christchurch people because they lost family members they loved and their houses in the earthquake," Sedona said.
"I thought this would help a bit. It's a card for all year round."
The card is a map of New Zealand and features pictures of a range of Kiwi icons, including Sedona's favourite, the Christchurch Cathedral.
The first print run of 50 arrived on Thursday, and Sedona said they turned out just how she expected.
"They're even better," she said.
She's selling them in packs of 5 for $7 or two packs for $12.
Ms Bayler said she was asked quite recently to help get the project off the ground after it had stalled. She spent an hour after school with Sedona, who she says is the youngest student she's ever worked with.
"[Sedona] explained what she wanted to do and I helped make it happen, but she's done all the hard work.
"It was good fun. I thought it was a sweet idea, very cool and proactive.
"It's nice to do things for other people. And she was lovely to work with."
Symbolic Kiwi images on the card include Mr Four Square, paua, kiwifruit and a pohutukawa tree.
Mum Dana Lett said she was "very proud" of her daughter. "It was her idea and it's fantastic to see it happen."
The cards were printed by Orange Dog Limited, which agreed to sponsor the project. They are unlikely to be the last thing Sedona designs, as she has aspirations to be a fashion designer.
The cards are available by emailing essymae02@gmail.com.
