Baby death: Mum breaches bail conditions

A Rotorua mother accused of killing her baby has breached her bail conditions by drinking alcohol.

Ngaire Kura Tukiwaho, 30, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua before Justice Patrick Keane yesterday for breaching her bail on February 4. She was represented by Wiremu Te Are.

Her bail conditions, which included she not possess or consume alcohol, were issued in the Rotorua District Court last year in relation to the manslaughter of her baby.

It is alleged she killed her baby by not providing him with a safe sleeping environment between January 4 and January 5 last year.

Tukiwaho's charge sheet states she "without lawful excuse, neglected her legal duty to supply a safe sleeping environment with the necessaries of life, whereby the death of [the child] was caused and thereby committed manslaughter".

Justice Keane said Tukiwaho had already appeared in the Rotorua District Court for breaching her bail in the same way in December and she was given a warning.

The latest breach of bail charge relates to an incident on February 4 when police were called to her house for a domestic dispute.

Alcohol played a part in the manslaughter charge, said Justice Keane, who bailed Tukiwaho to reappear in the High Court at Rotorua to stand trial on March 8. Bail was not opposed by the Crown.
