Olympic gold medallists Sarah Ulmer and Hamish Carter will be leading two 4 x 40km teams at today's Wattyl Round the Lake Cycle Race in Taupo.
Avanti Cycles ran a radio promotion for members of the public to be on the two teams captained by Carter and Ulmer.
The Olympians are both still in recovery mode after Athens, saying they are not fit enough to race the full 160km and are really happy to be doing just 40km.
"Forty kilometres is kinda scary enough anyway," laughed Carter.
"I am seriously unfit right now. I have just come back from a long break and am in no shape for 160km.
"It's great to be here.
"The more people and the more kids we can inspire the better," said Carter.
Ulmer has raced the full 160km several times in the past and loves it, but says that this year's team race will be focused on fun.
"I am absolutely happy to just be riding 40km, a few hours sounds a whole lot better than six right at the moment.
"It's great to do something different and just have some fun. I am really looking forward to it," she said.
Event co-ordinater Jocelyn Moyle said at 4pm yesterday they had over 9700 people entered and still had late entries coming in.
"We estimate we may have as many as 10,200 people racing tomorrow, making it the largest field ever," she said.
Moyle says the race is so popular because there is something for everyone, from 5km for kids to the enduro's riding 500km.
Ulmer and Carter will be riding the first leg for their teams heading over the start line at 8.45am.
