Hamilton shot a four under par 66 ahead of Nick Voke 67 and Compton Pikari 67. Tournament favourite Victor Janin struggled in the sweltering heat to finish the first round in 24th place with a round of 73.

In the women's division, Rotorua's Heather Keefe currently leads with an even par 72 ahead of Celyn Khoo 73, and Chantelle Cassidy 74.

The heat has been a major factor with temperatures in the high 20s, despite a westerly.

The 96 strong field are currently competing in their second round which is expected to be completed about 7.30pm this evening.

New Zealand MetService is predicting similar conditions for tomorrow's final round which gets underway at 8am.
