Only a week left to enrol

More than 900 Rotorua residents are no longer on the electoral roll and have only a week left to re-enrol if they want to vote in the upcoming local body elections.

Registrar of Electors Richard Marshall said 907 people were no longer enrolled in Rotorua and could lose their right to vote in October's Rotorua District Council and Lakes District Health Board elections.

"We're concerned about the number of people who we have had to remove from the electoral rolls in the past month," Mr Marshall said.

"These people are missing and we need to find them or they will miss out on getting their voting papers."

Mr Marshall said by law, when enrolment update packs sent out in the mail were returned marked "undeliverable", those people had to be deleted from the electoral roll.

"We want to ensure as many people as possible have the [ability] to vote.

"Every time someone moves house or flat they need to update their address details with us.

"It's a simple step that guarantees you are ready to vote whenever there is an election or referendum." Mr Marshall said he would urge anyone who had moved house to enrol today.

Anyone with family or friends who had moved should make sure they knew they needed to enrol or at least check their enrolment details, he said.
