Police investigating the New Year's Day stabbing of a man at Waihi Beach have had a major development over the weekend.

A knife was handed to a security guard on Thursday after a police appeal for help in finding the weapon used to kill Murray Wilkinson.

Police have been appealing for the person who handed in the knife to come forward and the guard failed to get details from the person.

Yesterday, police confirmed the person had come forward.

Mr Wilkinson was fatally stabbed outside a caravan parked in the driveway of a Waihi Beach home when he went to investigate a noise outside early on Tuesday morning.

The 64-year-old died in Waikato Hospital on Thursday from severe injuries to his head and neck.

A Waikato police spokesman said the investigating team, of at least 37 police staff, spent the weekend continuing to search an enlarged area around the site where Mr Wilkinson was attacked.

Further information was expected to be released today.

On Friday Mr Wilkinson's son, daughter and wife made a heartfelt plea to anyone who could help find their father's and husband's murderer.

"Somebody has the answer to my dad's death," said son Dan Wilkinson. "If you know anything - anything at all - please let the police know."
