Police in Tokoroa spent last night searching for the caregivers of a young boy found wandering in the town.

The boy, who is estimated to be about 2 years old, was first seen by a member of the public in the Carrington Cres area of the town about 9.30pm. At 11pm the same member of the public saw the boy again in the same area and contacted police.

Police collected the boy who they said was cold, upset and seemed disoriented.

He was put in the care of Child Youth and Family while police searched through the night to find his caregivers.

A team of officers were continuing those enquiries this morning when the boy's parents were found.

The 2-year-old boy was reunited with his mother this morning and police spoke to the family to establish the circumstances in which he left the family home.

Police this afternoon said the little boy had been staying overnight at a relative's home when he wandered from the property while they slept.
