Rotorua's under 5s have been able to help celebrate Bike Month by taking part in a Tykes on Trikes event.

About 50 Rotorua children under 5, including Annie Neilson, 3, and her sister Carlee Neilson, 1, got behind the Rotorua Bike Festival and took part in the annual Tykes on Trikes event. Some of those who took part dressed up in costumes and many decorated their bikes.

Annie and Carlee's mum, Leonie Annett, said her daughters enjoyed being part of the day. Carlee loved riding her bike and Annie had fun being around all the children.

Sport Bay of Plenty organised the event for children under 5 as part of Play in the Bay Bike Month. Tykes on Trikes involved children decorating their bikes and riding them over a fun obstacle course.

The event was held at the Village Green between 10am and 12pm yesterday.

Kirsty Carling, Sport Bay of Plenty early childhood adviser, said even though there were fewer children taking part this year than in previous years, it allowed the children to gain more confidence riding on the obstacle course. She said overall the day was "lots of fun".

"It was great," Ms Carling said.

She said all those who were part of Tykes on Trikes "had a great time".
