A 9-year-old boy is in Starship Hospital after being hit by a bus on Ranolf St next to the Rotorua Skate Park.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said they received a call about 11am to the skate park.

The child was initially taken to Rotorua Hospital's emergency department and was in a serious condition.

Sergeant Tony Bennett of the Rotorua police said the boy received a severe knock to the head causing a brain injury and had since been airlifted to Starship Hospital.

Mr Bennett said the child had been riding his push scooter across Ranolf St near the skate park when he collided with the side of a City Ride bus.

Mr Bennett said if anyone had any information in relation to the incident they should contact Rotorua police.
