The search for missing 35-year-old Leighton Grant in Taupo has turned to Motutaiko Island after items including a wetsuit were found there.

Mr Grant was last seen on Friday and his car was found on Monday at Hallets Bay, just south of Hatepe.

Last night searchers found items including a red, grey and black wetsuit on the island and police believe they belong to Mr Grant.

A team of about 25 LandSar volunteers and police officers are now focusing on a comprehensive search of the Island and its surrounding waters.

The island has wahi tapu areas so an Iwi representative is working alongside police.

Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has been in the vicinity of the island in recent days who may have seen someone swimming to the island, or any boaties who have taken anyone to or from the island.

Anyone with any information about Mr Grant's disappearance should call Taupo police on (07) 378 6060.
