He went to apply for the dole but instead of getting the weekly income payments, Rotorua's David Petersen got a job.

The 20-year-old went to apply for the unemployment benefit at the Rotorua office of Work and Income after moving back to Rotorua from Hamilton about a month ago.

Referred to a Work and Income WRK4U seminar before applying for the weekly income payments, Mr Petersen said he was pleased with the outcome after making the effort to attend.

"Two days before I was due to receive my first dole payment I got a job painting," he said. "I'd much rather be working. I'm a very active person and can't sit around doing nothing."

Even if he didn't get a job, the seminar was well worth taking in, said Mr Petersen.

"It's just great. It outlines what you are entitled to when you are on the dole and it also informs you about your obligations. You might already know what they are but it's made clear, so you can't get it wrong," he said.

Rotorua's Urban Painters owner Bernard O'Neill has recently taken on two unemployed workers through a Work and Income broker.

Mr O'Neill said it was an advantage having someone who knew where to source people from to fill job vacancies.

He receives a subsidy from Work and Income for employees he gives jobs to.

"It's good not having to hunt for workers myself," he said.

"I just ring up and tell them what I'm looking for and they do all the hunting for me. These guys know who is best suited for the job and I'm prepared to teach anyone what I know if they are willing to learn."
