Strangers Hannah White and Angels Kaienua had no idea what to expect when they visited Kuirau Park yesterday.

A community lunch called Breaking the Bread was held in the park for the first time, inviting people to meet locals and get to know the community.

Ms White said she was just walking through the park with family when organisers from the event asked her to join in.

"I think it is great. Some people came up to us and said to come over, have a feed and check it out."

Angels, 15, who had just met Ms White, said it was nice meeting new people and having a feed in the sun.

Breaking the Bread organiser Kingi Biddle said the shared lunch was all about bringing the community together. He said the event involved more than 50 people.
