BIG NAME: Michael Smither will join 70 Bay of Plenty artists at this year's Wearable Creation and Colour awards.

An award-winning  artist will exhibit in Rotorua as part of this year's Wearable Creation and Colour awards, which officially open on Sunday.

Michael Smither will join 70 other artists for what will be one of the biggest exhibitions of its kind in the Bay of Plenty.

The exhibition, at the Energy Events Centre, will feature  more than 200 pieces of art.

Creative Art Trust trustee Mijo Katavich said the exhibition would provide the public with an opportunity to view art from a diverse range of artists, styles and media.

"Having an artist of Michael's standing exhibit at our event is a fantastic opportunity for our community."

Featuring alongside  Smither will be Rotorua sculptor Trevor Nathan, whose carving works Nikau and Suspended will be on display for sale.

Other artists  include Lianne Maxwell, Martyn Evans, Judith Prictor, Mary Hodge and Bruce McLachlan.

The awards will  open on Sunday at an  invitation-only VIP cocktail function to give potential collectors a chance to secure the works.

The exhibition will then open to the public on Monday and will run until the following Saturday.

Each day between 11am and 2pm an artist will be working within the exhibition, allowing  an opportunity to see artworks in the making.

The exhibition will be open from 9am until 4pm daily. Admission is free.
