Woman airlifted off mountain
The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue helicopter was called to Mt Tongariro to pick up a tramper who slipped and was injured yesterday.
Helicopter pilot Nat Every said a 28-year-old woman had fractured her ankle while descending from the red crater.
Mr Every said the helicopter crew had to operate in near gale winds and severe turbulence to get to the injured woman who was then flown to Rotorua Hospital.
