Youth drove at 160km/h

Police tracked a teenager who sped through a residential Rotorua street at 160km/h and then crashed by following deep gouges in the road left by a damaged wheel.

Kewene John McIntyre, 18, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and driving while suspended when he appeared before Judge Chris McGuire in the Rotorua District Court yesterday.

McIntyre was driving at speed heading east on Ross Rd in Western Heights in Rotorua about 7pm Tuesday when he failed to give way to a van, hitting it and causing minor damage, the police summary states.

While the van driver stopped, McIntrye's car careered sideways across the road on to the grass verge on the opposite side, crashing through a street sign and slamming into a tree sideways, damaging a rear wheel.

Debris from McIntyre's car was scattered across the road and verge as he regained control of his car and drove off, according to the summary.

Police were called and followed the gouges in the road to Park Rd where McIntyre and his damaged car were found.

When spoken to by police, the teenager admitted "boosting it" and reaching speeds of about 160km/h before he crashed.

He said he didn't stop because he didn't want to be caught.

Earlier on Tuesday, police in Napier issued a non-operation order on McIntyre's car because of serious defects.

Judge McGuire remanded McIntyre in custody for sentencing in the Hamilton District Court on September 2.
